Vague copy isn't a talent problem — it's a pattern problem. The same handful of vague patterns show up on thousands of small-business homepages, and each has a mechanical fix. Here are the common ones, rewritten.
✗ "Your comfort is our mission."
✓ "Heating and air conditioning repair for homes in Mesa and Chandler."
The slogan could belong to a hotel, an airline, or a mattress brand. The rewrite tells a stranger the trade, the customer, and the territory in one sentence. You can keep the slogan — just never let it be the only thing above the fold.
✗ "Innovative solutions delivered with integrity and excellence."
✓ "We answer your call, show up in the window we promised, and quote the price before we start work."
"Integrity" and "excellence" are claims about yourself that cost nothing to make, so readers assign them no value. The rewrite converts each abstraction into a checkable behavior — which is what the abstractions were trying to gesture at anyway.
✗ "Residential · Commercial · Industrial · New Construction · Service · Maintenance · Design-Build"
✓ "Mostly, we fix broken water heaters and burst pipes for homeowners — usually same-day."
Listing everything you can do buries the thing you actually want more of. Lead with the job you want to be called for; put the full menu one click away.
✗ "Full-service MEP solutions with BIM coordination and design-assist delivery."
✓ "We handle the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing on commercial builds — and coordinate directly with your GC's models."
If your buyers genuinely speak the vocabulary, keep it. The failure mode is using contractor-to-contractor language on a page homeowners land on. Match the words to whoever actually visits.
✗ A phone number in the footer, an email on the contact page, a form nobody mentions.
✓ "Call (480) 555-0123 — we answer until 8pm. After hours, book online and we'll confirm by morning."
Every visitor ends their five seconds with the same silent question: okay, so what do I do? Answer it in the copy, once, specifically — including what happens if they act outside your hours, because a surprising share of them will.
